No sales pitch

Nothing is sold to you here. You look, you decide, you can walk away.

What You Get

Built for borrowers who are tired of guessing

Most people are trying to work this out across a dozen federal programs with different rules. My Way to Repay does that work for you.

See every option you qualify for

Your loans get checked against more than 150 repayment and forgiveness programs, including ones most borrowers never hear about.

Quick factPSLF wipes out what is left after 120 qualifying monthly payments, about 10 years in public service. No lump sum needed.

Lower your monthly payment

Income-driven plans can bring a payment down substantially. The tool shows you the numbers side by side before you commit to anything.

Quick factIncome-driven plans cap your bill at a share of your income. For some borrowers, that comes out to $0 a month.

Stay out of default

If you are behind, or worried about getting behind, there are ways back. Acting early keeps far more options open than waiting does.

Quick factOnce a federal loan defaults, wage garnishment and tax refund seizure can start without a court order. Early action avoids all of it.

Talk to a real person

On-call student loan counselors answer your questions directly. Not a call center script, and not a sales pitch.

Quick factDebtSmarts counselors are based right here in Wisconsin. No offshore call center, no script to read from.

Questions

Before you start

  • Is this really free?

Yes. There is no cost to you at any point, and you will never be asked for a payment. DebtSmarts is a Wisconsin nonprofit, and this is part of our free borrower support.

  • Do I have to change my repayment plan?

No. You can look at what you qualify for and decide to do nothing. Plenty of borrowers use it just to confirm they are already on the best plan for them.

  • What if my loans are already in default?

Still worth checking. There are routes out of default, and the sooner you look at them the more options you tend to have. Our helpline can also walk you through it.

  • What is PSLF, and would I qualify?

Public Service Loan Forgiveness can cancel remaining federal loan debt after a period of qualifying payments while working for government or an eligible nonprofit. The tool checks your eligibility as part of your results.

  • Who is this for?

Wisconsin residents with federal student loans, at any stage. Currently repaying, behind on payments, in default, or just trying to work out what changed this year.

Would rather talk it through first?

Our helpline is open all year. Free, confidential, and staffed by counselors in Wisconsin who deal with these programs every day.
